What Do Morel Mushrooms Taste Like?

To put it simply, Morel Mushrooms taste like the mushroom version of a really tender steak. The chewy, fall-apart texture is reminiscent of firm piece of pulled pork, or a thin slice of a ribeye. The meat-like texture is a huge reason that people enjoy eating them, including meat lovers like the Meat-Eater himself, Steve Rinella. Check out his take on Morels in one of his latest podcasts! If avid elk-hunters and fishermen say it tastes like meat, you better believe it.

What is the Flavor of Morel Mushrooms?

The meatiness of the Morel is mostly attributed to its consistency. However, remove the consistency, and what is the flavor like in its purest form? In our opinion, the flavor of Morel Mushrooms can be described as nutty, earthy, and strong. Its' somewhere in between the flavor of an almond, butter, and a charred piece of steak, but is actually quite unique. Similarly to the truffle mushroom, people consider the Morel to have one of the most robust, unique flavor profiles in the mushroom kingdom.

Are Morels Tasty On Their Own?

Most people prefer to cook morel mushrooms alongside other tasty ingredients. However, the morel is still delicious when it is the star of the dish. For a list of awesome morel mushroom recipes to get you started, check out our chef-curated recipes page! Chili-fried Morels anyone? Yes please!

Do Black and Yellow Morels Taste The Same?

In case you didn't know, there are many types of morel mushrooms. The most popular kinds to eat are Black Morels and Yellow (aka blonde) Morels. In my opinion, the flavor profiles are very very similar, especially when considering texture. However, the intensity of flavor is more detectable in Black Morels, making them my personal preference. If you can only get your hands on Yellows, you will still have a delicious bunch of mushrooms to try. Or, you can simply buy black morels online! Here's how.
